CAN Rejects Schools Closure in Kebbi
The Kebbi state branch of the Christian Association of Nigeria CAN has described as unfair and unjust the closure of schools in Kebbi during Ramadan fasting.
Venerable Dr. Ayyuba Kanta, the state Chairman, who made the position of state Christian body known at Sent Lukes Cathedral Anglican Church, said that the Kebbi Government took the unilateral decision on the closure of both primary and secondary schools in the state without any consultations with relevant stakeholders.
He explained that the Kebbi Government sees the Christians in the state as insignificant and therefore took the decision that is affecting not only Christians but even Muslim children who are supposed to be in school but are at home, disturbing their parents in a state already educationally lagging behind.
Kanta added that the Kebbi Government, who didn’t close markets, hospitals, and other social places, should have just reduced hours instead of total shutdown of schools: “The closure understood by me is political, not religious in whatever form is not acceptable to us.
Recall that Kebbi, Katsina, and some northern states have closed schools in their respective states for ease of doing Ramadan, which is generating heat across the country.
