Temitope Ajayi, the Presidency’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity (SSA), certainly didn’t have it the easy way as he has rephrased his initial statement that called for capital punishment within the confines of NYSC for corps member Ushie Uguamaye, who inadvertently termed his boss a terrible president.
Expressing his thoughts on the suitable reprimand for the corps member, Ajayi stated that Uguamaye deserved capital punishment under NYSC for daring to upload a video on TikTok to complain about the ills observed in Nigerian society while carrying out her mandatory service year with the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
Apparently, Ushie Uguamaye has become a momentary sensation due to her recent outcry about the economic downturn in the country. The said video has also garnered the attention of many political figures, including the 2023 presidential candidates Atiku Abubakar, Omoyele Sowore, and Peter Obi.
Ajayi stated:
“Citizens can abuse a living day out of their President or any public official. It is normal. But a corper violated her oath and conduct here. That is capital punishment under NYSC.
“You canโt abuse the country you are serving as a corper under any guise and the symbol of sovereign authority, which is the President. She should be punished to the fullest extent, not just with a warning. She chose to be silly; then she should face the consequences.โ
There must have been some sort of communication glitch, as emerging comments showed a broad spectrum of netizens attributing the term “capital punishment,” as used in this context by Ajayi, to mean the death penalty. Netizens have lashed out uncontrollably at Ajayi, labeling him as inhumane and insensitive. To clear the air, Ajayi made a supplementary post detailing his intention that Ushie Uguamaye should face expulsion from the NYSC Scheme, as opposed to what netizens interpreted.
โI made comments under a post where I inadvertently wrote that what the lady corper did should attract capital punishment under NYSC, which means her indiscretion should attract the highest punishment under the NYSC scheme.โ
“I suggested that flagrant and open abuse and disregard of NYSC by-laws and established protocol should attract the full NYSC disciplinary measures, particularly regarding a corps memberโs recent display of imprudence,โ Ajayi stated.
