Obiageli Ezekwesili, the former Minister of Education and the Vice President of the World Bank’s Africa Division, has labeled the country as corruption-ridden, stating that in comparison to the military era, which upheld the principles of the rule of law, the country has many unticked boxes to stand tall.
Taking to X to share her thoughts, the two-time Nigerian minister said that the judiciary during the military regime was far better than that of today. Ezekwesili alleged that the system of judiciary practiced in modern-day Nigeria is akin to activities in the market, where the highest bidder is given honour.
โWe once had an unimpeachable judiciary โฆโฆ even in the days of military rule in this country,โ Ms Ezekwesili said.
โDoes Nigeria still have a judiciary? Or are you talking of a group of people who have willingly sold out the country to ignoble politicians and desecrated the judicial system that we once knew?โ
โOur generation once knew judges and justices who were totally incorruptible and would never have gladly suffered any of these hewers of wood and drawers of water the political class that are hell-bent on destroying our country,โ
โThere must be a rethink and a hard reset. If the people we have sworn to defend have lost confidence, there is a problem that must be addressed,โ Mr Dattijo quoted Adebola Adefope-Okojie as saying in May 2023 during her retirement party.”
The 61-year-old former 2019 presidential candidate under the Allied Congress Party of Nigeria (ACPN) reminisced about the era that upheld the sanctity of law, where judges were known for equity and justice and stood toe-to-toe with injustice, as opposed to now when the fattest bank accounts tell the innocent and guilty apart.
