Asaba, Delta State – In a proactive move to curb insecurity and enhance safety in the state capital, the Asagba of Asaba, Professor Epiphany Azinge, SAN, has launched “Operation Know Your Tenants and Neighbours.” This initiative aims to improve community surveillance and ensure a more secure living environment within Asaba’s Capital Territory.
The monarch, speaking through the Palace Secretary, Chief Patrick Ndili, made the announcement during the flag-off ceremony of a one-month special clean-up exercise and enforcement of premises sanitation within the Capital Territory.
The clean-up exercise is spearheaded by the Director-General of the Asaba Capital Territory Development Agency, Chief Patrick Ukah, in collaboration with the Executive Chairman of the Delta State Waste Management Board, Hon. Matthew Mofe Edema, and the Chairman of the State Taskforce on Environment, Chief Godspower Asiuwhu.
Community Effort to Enhance Security and Cleanliness
Asagba Azinge lauded the collaborative efforts of stakeholders, emphasizing that the Asaba community is committed to supporting the state government’s initiatives. He stressed that environmental cleanliness and community security go hand in hand, adding that residents must be proactive in monitoring their surroundings.
Speaking at the event, Chief Ukah noted that residents had been given ample notice about the clean-up exercise since last year. The delay in enforcement, he explained, was to allow sufficient time for compliance with established regulations.
The one-month exercise will involve:
1. Cleaning of designated areas
2. Public sensitization on sanitation best practices
3. Premises inspections and enforcement of sanitation rules
4. Provision of waste bins and PSP (Private Sector Participation) registration
Additionally, the monitoring team will ensure compliance with urban beautification policies, including:
1. Painting of fences
2. Maintaining a 15-meter setback from roads
3. Installing security lights
4. Clearing overgrown grasses
Strict Enforcement Measures in Place
To ensure compliance, Ukah warned that residents must take responsibility for their surroundings rather than waiting for enforcement action. A Mobile Court has been set up to prosecute offenders who fail to adhere to the sanitation and security directives.
Ukah also commended the Asagba of Asaba for his unwavering commitment to the city’s cleanliness and security. He urged residents to be vigilant and conscious of the people living within their communities, emphasizing that maintaining security is a collective responsibility.
With these measures in place, Asaba residents are expected to play an active role in fostering a safer and cleaner environment for all.
