Reports gathered from the inferno that gutted the Federal Capital Territory a few miles away from the Nyanya Bridge in Abuja revealed that no fewer than 20 staff members of a Chinese company identified as WE might have to suffer eternal scars from burn injuries.
Subsequent reports also revealed that two staff members of the WE company were feared dead as a result of the tanker explosion.
Eyewitnesses reported that the accident happened on Wednesday at about 6:58 PM, seconds after a head-on collision occurred between a Dangote cement trailer and some stationary vehicles held up in traffic. The Dangote cement-carrying trailer was said to have lost control, crashing into the vehicles in the hold-up around Nyanya Bridge from AYA.
The ripple effect was a wild inferno that caused irrational fears and panic among bystanders and motorists.
As rescue teams intensified efforts to get those affected to safety, reports came that one of the explosion victims who had been rushed to a nearby hospital, a staff member of the WE company, died at Asokoro Hospital, while several others at the National Hospital narrowly escaped death with scars of varying magnitude.
A source from the WE company addressed some members of the press on Thursday morning, noting that two staff members of the company had died from burn injuries while 20 others were still battling in the hospital with diverse degrees of burns.
“We lost two workers, and twenty others sustained injuries. As I speak to you now, I have been receiving calls about two individuals I have not yet seen. They are not necessarily missing, but their families have informed me that they are injured. However, some of the injured have been taken to hospitals that may be out of my reach, making it difficult to track them.”
Confirming to the press the level of the organization’s support for the deceased and those brutally injured, the source stated he has been engaged in activities since the incident unfolded, assisting hospitals and families of the deceased in the best ways he can.
