In a major breakthrough against illegal arms trafficking, operatives of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command have intercepted a suspected terrorist and gunrunner attempting to smuggle live ammunition concealed inside jerrycans of palm oil.
The suspect, identified as 32-year-old Nuhu Aminu, was apprehended at the Nyanya bus terminal on March 24, 2025, following a meticulously planned operation based on credible intelligence. Security agencies had received reports of an imminent illegal shipment of ammunition within the state, prompting swift action by law enforcement.
The successful operation was a collaborative effort between the police operatives from the Nyanya Division of the FCT Command and members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW). During the search, officers discovered two 25-litre jerrycans filled with palm oil, which upon closer inspection, were found to contain 488 rounds of live AK-47 ammunition ingeniously concealed to evade detection.
Upon interrogation, Aminu confessed that he had been hired by an individual named Yakubu Kachalla to receive the consignment and deliver it to Katsina. According to the suspect, he was promised and paid the sum of ₦100,000 for the delivery.
Speaking on the arrest, the spokesperson of the FCT Police Command, SP Josephine Adeh, confirmed that the suspect has been taken into custody, and an extensive investigation is currently underway to uncover the full network behind the arms smuggling operation. Authorities are particularly focused on tracking down the origin of the ammunition and apprehending all individuals involved.
This development highlights the persistent threat of arms trafficking within the region and underscores the commitment of security agencies to curbing illegal arms proliferation, which fuels criminal activities and endangers public safety.
The FCT Police Command has urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities, as collaborative efforts between law enforcement and community members are crucial in the fight against crime. More updates on this investigation will be provided as events unfold.
