The Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS) has confirmed the recapture of five out of the twelve inmates who escaped from the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Koton Karfe, Kogi State, following a daring jailbreak. Security operatives remain on high alert as the manhunt for the remaining seven fugitives intensifies.
How the Jailbreak Happened
According to a statement released by the Service Public Relations Officer, Abubakar Umar, the prison break occurred in the early hours of Monday, March 24. Preliminary investigations suggest that some inmates awaiting trial manipulated the security locks in their section, successfully facilitating an escape. The breach led to a total of twelve prisoners fleeing the correctional facility before authorities could intervene.
Swift Response from Security Agencies
Upon receiving the distress report, the Acting Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Nwakuche, immediately mobilized a rapid response team. In collaboration with heads of security agencies and the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor of Kogi State, an intensive search operation was launched to track down the escapees. Security was also reinforced within and around Kogi State to prevent further breaches and ensure that the fugitives had no safe passage.
Progress in the Manhunt
Mr. Umar confirmed that five of the escaped inmates have been successfully apprehended and returned to custody. He assured the public that efforts are being doubled to locate and capture the remaining seven prisoners.
“As of this moment, five of the fleeing inmates have been recaptured, while a relentless manhunt continues to apprehend the remaining escapees and bring them to justice,” Umar stated.
Strengthening Security Measures
In light of the prison break, the Correctional Service has vowed to tighten security measures in custodial centers nationwide. The incident has once again highlighted the vulnerability of some correctional facilities, prompting calls for enhanced surveillance and better infrastructural safeguards to prevent future breaches.
The agency reaffirmed its commitment to pursuing all escapees until every last one is back behind bars. Additionally, they have urged citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities or unfamiliar faces to the authorities.
Public Cooperation and Call for Vigilance
The Correctional Service has called on residents of Kogi State and beyond to assist in the recapture efforts. Law enforcement agencies have circulated descriptions of the escaped inmates and have warned the public against offering them shelter or assistance.
Authorities have assured Nigerians that they remain dedicated to ensuring that justice prevails and that all necessary measures will be put in place to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
The Peoples’ Insight will continue to monitor and report on developments regarding the Kogi prison break and the ongoing efforts to secure the remaining escapees.
