The Federal Government of Nigeria has commenced an intensive training program for 800 personnel drawn from the Army, Navy, and Air Force, transforming them into an elite Special Operations Force. This initiative aims to strengthen national security and enhance the country’s ability to tackle emerging threats.
Speaking at the official launch of the training at Camp Kabala, Jaji Military Cantonment in Kaduna, the Minister of Defence, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, underscored the significance of establishing a highly skilled and agile force.
“This Special Operations Force will serve as a crucial pillar in safeguarding our national sovereignty, protecting citizens, and maintaining peace and stability both within and beyond our borders,” he stated.
The comprehensive training program includes special combat tactics, counterterrorism operations, intelligence gathering, and hostage rescue missions, equipping the troops with the necessary expertise to confront evolving security challenges. Additionally, the program is designed to enhance inter-agency collaboration among security forces while testing the physical and psychological resilience of personnel.
According to the Minister, “This inauguration marks the training of the first batch of 800 personnel out of a total of 2,400 troops who will undergo this specialized program as part of a long-term strategy to develop world-class special operations capabilities within the Armed Forces of Nigeria.”
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to equipping the Special Operations Forces with cutting-edge weapons, advanced surveillance systems, and intelligence tools to maximize operational efficiency.
The Chief of Army Staff, General Christopher Musa, hailed the initiative as a landmark development in Nigeria’s security architecture.
“The evolving landscape of modern warfare and the increasing threats posed by asymmetric conflicts necessitate that our forces be highly trained, well-equipped, and prepared to respond swiftly and decisively,” he stated.
Commending the troops undergoing the rigorous training, General Musa added, “You represent the vanguard of a new era in our defense strategy.”
Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani, represented by his deputy, Dr. Hadiza Sabuwa Balarabe, also praised the initiative.
“In today’s complex security environment, threats are ever-evolving—from terrorism and banditry to cyber threats and transnational crimes. This training marks a bold step toward preparing a new generation of elite troops capable of defending our sovereignty with precision and courage,” she noted.
The Special Operations Force initiative is expected to significantly enhance Nigeria’s ability to tackle internal and external security challenges, ensuring a safer and more stable nation.
