The Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, has confirmed the death of a suspected pipeline vandal who was attempting to sabotage a critical national asset in Rumuekpe, Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State.
Speaking to journalists in Port Harcourt on Tuesday, Adepoju revealed that the suspect lost his life while trying to detonate an oil pipeline. He credited the swift intervention of security agencies for preventing what could have been a major disaster, emphasizing the commitment of law enforcement to safeguarding national infrastructure.
According to the commissioner, the collaborative efforts of security forces in Rivers State have been instrumental in curbing criminal activities, particularly those targeting vital installations. He reiterated the importance of protecting these assets, which are not only essential to the state but also to the entire nation’s economic stability.
“I must stress the critical importance of securing national assets and infrastructure within Rivers State. These assets are vital, not only to the people of Rivers State but to the entire nation’s economic well-being,” Adepoju stated.
He explained that the state’s security strategy had been reinforced in response to emerging threats that could have been exploited by criminal elements to destabilize the region. The commissioner reassured residents that while the current security measures might appear intense, they were necessary to ensure long-term peace and stability.
The foiled vandalism attempt at the Allu-Rumuekpe axis was one of several recent security successes, he said. “Over the past week, the joint efforts of security agencies in Rivers State have prevented multiple acts of sabotage. In this particular incident, the suspect attempted to bomb a pipeline but was intercepted by security operatives. In the process, he lost his life.”
Adepoju urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to law enforcement, stressing that the authorities would not relent in their efforts to clamp down on crime and maintain peace in the state.
