Abuja was thrown into chaos on Friday, March 28, after a violent clash between security operatives and members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) during a protest in solidarity with Palestine.
The demonstration, a tradition observed by Shiites on the last Friday of Ramadan, took place around Banex Roundabout in Wuse 2. However, what began as a peaceful procession soon turned bloody after some protesters reportedly threw stones at security forces.
In response, security operatives fired live rounds to disperse the crowd, leading to panic and casualties. According to IMN spokesperson Sidi Munir Sokoto, at least five protesters may have been killed in what he described as a blatant abuse of power.
“This is yet another tragic incident where security forces have targeted innocent civilians who were merely exercising their right to peaceful assembly,” Sokoto stated.
As of the time of this report, the exact number of casualties and arrests remains unconfirmed. However, eyewitness accounts suggest that around five people lost their lives.
“We urge the relevant authorities to investigate this incident and uphold the rights of citizens. The freedom to peaceful assembly is an inalienable constitutional right that must not be violated,” Sokoto added.
The incident has sparked concerns over the use of excessive force by security agencies, with human rights groups calling for accountability.
