The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Joe Ajaero, has issued a directive to union leaders across the country to mobilize members in preparation for a nationwide takeover of Labour Party (LP) offices, including the party’s national secretariat in Abuja.
This development comes in the wake of a recent Supreme Court ruling, which overturned previous lower court decisions that had been a source of contention within the party.
In an internal memo, Ajaero expressed the resolve of Nigerian workers and “genuine members” of the Labour Party to reclaim what he described as their rightful political platform.
“Just as we warned over a year ago, Nigerian workers and true members of the Labour Party will always recover what belongs to them—no matter how long mischief prevails,” Ajaero wrote.
He called on all workers, authentic LP members, and democracy advocates to remain on standby for a peaceful repossession of the 36 state offices and the national headquarters of the party.
Ajaero also criticized the continued self-recognition of Julius Abure and his faction as national officers of the LP, despite the Supreme Court’s judgment. He urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to immediately remove their names from its official records.
“We expect the cooperation of all institutions, including INEC, as we work to uphold the rule of law. Any action to the contrary will portray Nigeria as a banana republic,” he added.
The NLC president warned that Nigerian workers and patriots will not fold their arms while, in his words, “unscrupulous elements trample on the nation’s laws and undermine the Supreme Court’s verdict.”
Reacting to the directive, the Labour Party’s National Secretary, Alhaji Umar Farouk, dismissed the threat. “We are preparing a statement in response. The threat is nothing new—we are used to their rascality,” he said.
