Things almost degenerated into a wrestling bout moments after a heated controversy when the Bauchi State Deputy Governor, Auwal Jatau, lost his temper and allegedly slapped Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, the Minister of Foreign Affairs.
Sources privy to the bone of contention disclosed that the heated exchange of words occurred during the wedding ceremony of the state’s former governor, MA Abubakar, in the state capital, where, inadvertently, the Minister, Mr. Tuggar, made some comments perceived to be rude regarding Governor Bala Mohammed’s administration.
Tuggar, prior to this incident, had been in the political negative limelight following a grave accusation of spreading misinformation and making disparaging remarks about the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)-led administration in Bauchi State.
He has also been alleged to have uttered statements that drew criticism from political stakeholders and constituents.
Following his misconduct, citizens and residents of the state have expressed disappointment in his conduct, questioning his contributions to the state and labeling his recent comments as โgrandstandingโ and โdivisive.โ
An anonymous source claimed that the tension leading to the slap had escalated sporadically, degenerating into a physical altercation.
โIt was a shocking moment. The Deputy Governor was visibly furious. If not for the timely intervention of Vice President Kashim Shettima, who was present, the situation could have gotten completely out of hand,โ the source said.
As members of the press await an official statement, it is safe to say they were met with disappointment as none has been heard so far from either the Bauchi State Government or the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Enthusiasts and pundits have speculated that the recent outburst between the duo will strain the state’s political dealings.
