The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arraigned a hip-hop star identified as Terry Alexander Ejeh before Justice Akintayo Aluko over an abuse of the naira offense.
Alexander Ejeh was reported to have stepped on the naira notes while having a dance at a social event in Madison Place, Oniru, Lagos Island.
To this effect, the Federal High Court sitting in Lagos on Friday ordered that Alexander Ejeh, popularly known to many as Terry Apala, be remanded in the Ikoyi Correctional Centre, Lagos, until the hearing and determination of his bail application.
Ejeh’s charge reads:
“That you, TERRY ALEXANDER EJEH, on the 5th day of January 2025 at Madison Place, Oniru, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable court whilst dancing during a social event tampered with Naira currency issued by the Central Bank of Nigeria by matching on it and you thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 21(1) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act 2007.”
Justice Aluko had adjourned the hearing of the case until May 5, 2025, for trial shortly after Ejeh pleaded not guilty to the charge, and his counsel, Felix Nwakbudu, informed Justice Aluko of a pending bail application filed on behalf of the defendant.
The counsel to the EFCC, Sulaimon Sulaiman, informed the court about the pending charge against the defendant and urged the court to order that the charge be read so that the defendant could take his plea.
After Ejeh pleaded not guilty, the EFCC’s counsel, Sulaiman Sulaimon, requested a trial date and asked that the defendant be remanded in the Nigerian Correctional Centre.
Felix Nwakbudu stated that the prosecution had been served with the bail application and requested to move the application. However, the prosecutor opposed the hearing, citing insufficient time to review the application and prepare a response, having received it just hours before the court sitting.
