Operatives of the Delta State Police Command have successfully neutralized a notorious kidnapping gang, recovering an AK-47 rifle and 132 rounds of live ammunition in the process.
According to reports, the operation was carried out following credible intelligence, which led the officers to a known kidnappers’ hideout. Upon arrival, they were met with heavy gunfire but swiftly returned fire.
Confirming the incident in a statement released on Sunday, April 27, in Asaba, the Delta State capital, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Bright Edafe, said the gang had been terrorizing Ubulu-Uku, Issele-Uku, Issele-Asagba, and surrounding communities.
Edafe disclosed that the officers first raided a hideout in the Agu-Amawbia forest, Anambra State, before extending their investigation to another location — a forest between Issele-Asagba and Otulu.
He said,
“Upon approaching the hideout, one Bellow Abubakar and his gang members, who had laid an ambush, opened fire on the police team. However, the operatives, anticipating resistance, engaged them fiercely.“The suspects, unable to withstand the superior firepower, fled in various directions with bullet wounds. Five suspects, including Bellow Abubakar, were apprehended but later confirmed dead at the hospital due to the severity of their injuries.”
The police spokesperson further revealed that efforts are ongoing to track down the fleeing and injured gang members.
