In a dramatic bid to end the lingering political crisis in Rivers State, Governor Siminalayi Fubara has reached out to his estranged political mentor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, at his Abuja residence.
The surprise visit, which took place under the mediation of key political figures — Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru, and former Ogun State Governor Olusegun Osoba — marks a significant step towards mending the fractured relationship between the two leaders.
According to insiders, Fubara entered Wike’s residence and proceeded directly to his living room, where he reportedly pleaded for reconciliation. A close source who confirmed the meeting said, “Yes, there was a meeting, and I can confirm that,” but declined to comment on its outcome or whether it would influence the state of emergency declared in Rivers State.
The rift between Wike and Fubara erupted shortly after the latter assumed office in 2023, escalating into a full-blown crisis that prompted President Bola Tinubu to declare a state of emergency in the state — a move that saw the suspension of Fubara, his deputy, and the entire state House of Assembly.
Wike, according to multiple reports, had pushed for Fubara’s removal from office. However, President Tinubu’s timely intervention halted the political purge and offered the embattled governor a lifeline.
While the meeting in Abuja signals a thaw in relations, political analysts say the road to lasting peace in Rivers may still be long and uncertain.
