Saturday, the 3rd of May 2025, witnessed the laying to rest of Ayo Adebanjo, the late elder statesman and leader of the Afenifere, who passed on to glory at the age of 96 on February 14, 2025.
Ayo Adebanjo’s funeral service was held at St. Philip Anglican Church in Isanya Ogbo, Odogbolu Local Government Area of Ogun State.
The funeral service was attended by Nigeria’s Who’s Who, including former President Olusegun Obasanjo, former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Labour Partyโs 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde.
Some other notable figures who were at the occasion to pay their heartfelt tribute include former Ogun State governors Gbenga Daniel and Ibikunle Amosun, Central Bank Governor Yemi Cardoso, former deputy governor Senator Adegbenga Kaka, and Chief Ayo Opadokun.
Describing the late Ayo Adebanjo, Governor Abiodun noted he was a champion of justice and federalism, recalling his tenacious stance against military rule.
The governor also commended Adebanjo’s dedication to revitalizing the Afenifere group as a thriving as a socio-political force in Nigeria.
At the funeral service, Bishop Michael Fape of the Remo Diocese urged Nigerians to draw lessons from Adebanjo’s selfless life.
Bishop Fepa who preached from the book of John, called on leaders to be more selfless and committed to national progress, as it yields promising and bountiful results, and everlasting good deeds.
