In a stunning political shift, the Delta State House of Assembly has become entirely dominated by the All Progressives Congress (APC) following the defection of the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor, and 21 other lawmakers from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Announcing the development during Tuesday’s plenary, Speaker Guwor stated that the mass defection followed extensive consultations with constituents and key political stakeholders across the state. According to him, the decision was made in the best interest of Delta State and its people.
“The mass movement from the PDP to the APC, which includes myself and 21 colleagues, is driven by our commitment to align with the Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the sake of accelerated development in Delta,” Guwor declared.
He further explained that the defection is in line with the provisions of Section 109 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which allows lawmakers to change parties in cases of internal division within their former parties.

Supporting the move, Majority Leader Hon. Emeka Nwaobi cited internal crises rocking the PDP both at the national level and in the South-South zone as the main catalyst for their exit.
“The national instability and deep factionalization within the PDP have left us with no viable political future in the party. After due consultation, we unanimously resolved to join the APC in accordance with constitutional provisions,” Nwaobi stated.
With this sweeping defection, the Delta State House of Assembly now comprises solely APC members, marking a historic political realignment in the state.
