A serving police officer, identified as Police Constable Idris Oloyede, who was arrested in Ogun State for alleged conspiracy, cybercrime, and related offences, has escaped from police custody.
According to a signal from the Ogun State Command of the Nigeria Police Force obtained by SaharaReporters on Thursday, Oloyede was apprehended on May 21, 2025, around 6:10 PM, but managed to escape from the Anti-Kidnapping Unit’s custody at approximately 11:30 PM, just a few hours after his arrest.
โThe Police Constable Idris Oloyede, a.k.a Abuja, attached to Odeda Police Divisional headquarters who is under investigation by operatives of Anti-Kidnapping Unit of Ogun State for offences of conspiracy, robbery and stealing has escaped from the team while on enquiry at Odeda Township at about 2330hrs of May 21, 2025.”
โHe has been declared wanted by the COMPOL Ogun State Command. If seen, be arrested and hand over to Supol Odeda for necessary action.โ
The Command reported that the officer escaped while the Anti-Kidnapping Unit team was conducting an enquiry at Odeda Township.
Police Constable Idris Oloyede, with Force Number 537972 and attached to Patrol Teak Mine, was arrested for allegedly collaborating with known cybercriminals in online fraud schemes.
His arrest followed a confession from a detained suspect, who claimed Oloyede had provided him with Facebook accounts and an MTN SIM card used to target victims in cybercrimes.
A subsequent search of Oloyedeโs private residence near the Odeda Police Barracks uncovered iPhones and several SIM cards, believed to be linked to the criminal activities. After initial questioning, he was transferred to the Anti-Kidnapping Unit at the State CID in Abeokuta for further investigation.
Oloyedeโs involvement highlights growing concerns about the role of some law enforcement officers in cybercrime.
