A female student taking part in the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) lost her life on Friday when a truck reportedly lost control and rammed into a group of students in Ikangba, Ijebu Ode, Ogun State.
The accident, which also left another student in critical condition, occurred along the recently rehabilitated Ikangba/Agoro Road.
Eyewitnesses reported that the students from Seico Secondary School were on their way home after finishing their exam for the day when the truck, allegedly coming from the Molipa direction, swerved off its lane.
It struck the students before crashing into the fence of a nearby Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) branch.
Mr. Eko Nicholas, a local resident and chairman of the Ogun State chapter of the Campaign for Democratic and Workers Rights (CDWR), described the incident as both tragic and avoidable.
โNobody knew what actually made the truck coming from Molipa end of the road to veer off and ram into the students coming from the opposite direction and crashing into the fence of a Redeemed church beside the road,โ he said.
โThe students were obviously those writing this ongoing WASSCE because they were holding the question papers. One of the students, a female, died on the spot while another female was also critically injured. We are all praying she make it.โ
โThis is yet another needless death on the Ikangba/Agoro road, bringing the number of souls lost from February to six, including several ones that were injured,โ he said.
โWe again call on the state government to construct speed breakers and street lights to stem these avoidable and painful deaths. The CDWR has before this time called on the state government to no avail.
โThe government should immediately provide speed barriers before another death occurs on the road, as several schools are located on this same road, and school children trek to and from the schools on a daily basis.โ
