The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has confirmed that the explosion in Abuja on Monday afternoon was the result of a failed suicide bombing attempt.
NEMA reported that the blast occurred when a person wearing an improvised explosive device (IED) tried to breach the Mogadishu Army Cantonment located along the Mararaba-Nyanya expressway.
“Preliminary information indicated that the suicide bomber was attempting to gain unauthorised entry into the barracks when the IED detonated,” NEMA noted.
Both the Nigerian Army and the Federal Capital Territory Command of the Nigeria Police Force verified the explosion and noted that investigations were underway.
The police further reported that their Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit transported the injured victim to the National Hospital and secured the site for further analysis.
The IED detonated during the bomberโs attempt to enter the military facility, resulting in their immediate death and injuring a civilian nearby.
Authorities were alerted to the incident at approximately 1:47 p.m. on Monday, prompting NEMA to deploy an emergency response team.
The injured civilian was promptly evacuated by the police EOD unit to the National Hospital, while forensic experts began their investigation at the scene.
The operation concluded officially at 5:29 p.m., with a coordinated response involving multiple agencies including NEMA, the military, the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).
