A 75-year-old pilgrim from Edo State, Adizatu Dazumi, has passed away during the 2025 Hajj pilgrimage. Dazumi, who hailed from Jattu Uzairue in Etsako West Local Government Area, died on Monday at King Fahad General Hospital in Makkah following a brief illness.
According to reports, she had completed the the circumambulation of the Kaaba known as the Tawaaf before falling ill. She was admitted to the hospital on Sunday and died the next day.
The Chairman of the Edo State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board, Musah Uduimoh, confirmed her death on Tuesday. He extended condolences to her family and reaffirmed the boardโs commitment to safeguarding the health and well-being of all pilgrims.
Dazumi’s passing highlights ongoing health challenges faced by pilgrims during the physically demanding pilgrimage. Each year, millions of Muslims travel to the holy cities of Makkah and Madinah, and health-related incidents remain a concern, particularly for elderly pilgrims.
In 2023, at least four Nigerian pilgrims died during Hajj due to pre-existing medical conditions worsened by extreme heat and the strenuous nature of the rituals. In response, Saudi authorities and national Hajj boards have enhanced safety measures, including better medical screenings, improved healthcare services, and orientation programs.
Despite these efforts, the pilgrimage continues to pose health risks, especially for senior participants. As the 2025 Hajj progresses, Nigerian officials are advising pilgrims to stay hydrated, adhere to medical guidance, and promptly report any signs of illness.
Uduimoh notes that Dazumi was laid to rest in Makkah after he family was informed.
โShe was buried in Makkah on the same day, according to Islamic tradition, and her family in Jattu Uzairue has been informed,โ Uduimoh said.
