The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has issued an apology for the delay in administering the English Language Paper 2 during the ongoing 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the exam was eventually held on Wednesday evening, with reports from Lagos State indicating that some students were still writing as late as 11:45 p.m.
In a statement released by Moyosola Adesina, Acting Head of WAECโs Public Affairs Department, the council explained that it faced some challenges concerning the leakage of questions, leading to a last-minute command for freshly typed questions.
While it managed to fulfill its objective, WAEC acknowledged that these issues affected the timely and smooth execution of the examination.
The council reiterated its dedication to maintaining the highest standards in the conduct of its exams and affirmed its continued commitment to fostering academic excellence.
“While maintaining the integrity and security of our examination, we faced considerable challenges primarily due to our major aim of preventing leakage of any paper.”
โWe recognize the importance of timely conduct of examinations and the impact of this decision on candidates, their schools and parents, and we sincerely apologise for any inconveniences caused.”
โIn spite of our best efforts, we encountered logistical hurdles, security concerns and socio-cultural factors that negatively influenced our operations,โ WAEC stated.
