Former President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed deep sorrow regarding the recent disasters in Niger and Kano states, which have resulted in the deaths of more than 170 individuals.
The two incidents that featured a major flood and a fatal road accident occurred just days apart, sending ripples of sorrow throughout the country.
In a statement issued by Garba Shehu, Buhari’s spokesperson, Buhari offered heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims, as well as to the governments and communities affected.
The floods in Niger State last week submerged entire communities, destroying homes, farmland, and infrastructure.
At least 150 people lost their lives, and thousands were displaced as emergency services rushed to deliver aid and temporary shelter.
While Niger was reeling from the flooding, tragedy struck in Kano State, where 22 young athletes, coaches, and sports officials were killed in a horrific car crash.
The group was returning from a sports festival in Abeokuta, Ogun State, when the accident occurred.
These back-to-back tragedies have drawn widespread mourning across Nigeria, with prominent individuals and organizations extending sympathies and urging improvements in infrastructure and safety measures.
Buhari, who served as Nigeriaโs president from 2015 to 2023, said the close timing of the incidents left him deeply shocked and heartbroken, a sentiment echoed by many at home and abroad.
โI am deeply pained by the loss of lives due to the floods in Niger State and the road accident in Kano State. The deaths are painful and devastating,โ Buhari said in the statement.
โCondolences to the families and friends of all those who have lost their loved ones. May the injured recover soon,” he noted.
