Massive reconstruction hit Mokwa community following a presidential directive on the reconstruction of the collapsed Mokwa Bridge.
The Federal Ministry of Works is to commence immediate repairs on the collapsed Mokwa Bridge, a bridge that serves as a critical link between northern and southern Nigeria.
The collapse occurred following severe flooding that has disrupted transportation infrastructure, including roads and other bridges in Mokwa town.
The directive was announced by the Minister of State for Works, Barrister Bello Goronyo, who led a Federal Government delegation on a condolence visit to Mokwa Local Government Area in Niger State on Tuesday.
Goronyo emphasized the strategic role of the Mokwa road in Nigeriaโs transportation network and assured that the ministry is fully committed to ensuring its continued use.
Following the Presidentโs order, CGC Construction Company, which is located near the bridge site, has been mobilized to carry out temporary works to restore access for vehicles, pending full reconstruction.
Goronyo also revealed that a technical committee, headed by Minister of Works Engr. David Umahi, has been tasked with assessing bridges nationwide that may have exceeded their service life. The committeeโs recommendations will be submitted soon for necessary action.
While visiting internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Mokwa, the minister appealed to well-meaning individuals and private organizations to assist the victims with essential support such as food, shelter, and medical care.
Earlier, the Deputy Governor of Niger State, Comrade Yakubu Garba, who welcomed the Minister in Minna before their journey to Mokwa, commended the federal government for its prompt response.
Garba noted that at least three official delegations had visited the state to show solidarity and provide relief materials.
He also pointed to human-related factors behind the disaster, particularly unauthorized construction on waterways, and stated that state authorities, local governments, and traditional rulers would soon intensify enforcement of building regulations to prevent future incidents.
Excerpt:
โWe are here for two main reasons: first, to commiserate with the government and people of Niger State over this unfortunate incident that has resulted in loss of lives and properties; and second, to assess the extent of the damage to the bridge,โ Goronyo initialized.
“These people need urgent help. While the government is playing its part, we appeal to well meaning individuals and organizations to extend support,โ he urged.
