The presidency has expressed his sincerest condolences to the family and friends, including numerous admirers of Mike Ejeagha, a legendary Nigerian folklorist, songwriter, and Igbo musician, who died on Friday at the age of 95.
In a statement released on Saturday by his spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu praised Ejeagha for using his music and unique storytelling approach to safeguard and promote Igbo culture and traditions, leaving a lasting legacy that continues to inspire generations.
The President also lauded the Enugu State Government, under the leadership of Governor Peter Mbah, for recognizing and celebrating the music legend during his lifetime.
President Tinubu offered prayers for the late singer’s soul to find eternal rest and for comfort to be granted to all who are grieving his passing.
The People’s Insight recalls that Ejeagha became an internet sensation when content creator Brain Jotter in 2024 hopped on his “Gwo-Gwo-Gwo-Ngwo” track to produce a comic skit. Not long after, other content creators, including celebrities, joined the challenge, making it one of the most epic challenges on TikTok.
The trend, cum challenge, revived Ejeagha’s 1983 song โKa Esi Le Onye Isi Oche,โ featuring the catchy refrain โGwo Gwo Gwo Ngwoโ, endearing young millennials and Gen-Zs to the legendary track.
โMay the spirit and values of Gentleman Mike Ejeaghaโs music continue to remind us that music has the power to revive, heal and redirect energy towards worthy causes that help build our nation,โ President Tinubu said.
