Several members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) have been left stranded after a violent windstorm struck the orientation camp in Amada, located in Akko Local Government Area of Gombe State.
The storm, which hit on Tuesday, caused extensive damage to essential infrastructure, including the camp’s multipurpose pavilion and several hostels, leaving rooms leaking or entirely exposed to the elements.
Chinwe Nwachuku, the NYSC Coordinator for Gombe State, revealed the incident during the swearing-in ceremony for the 2025 Batch โAโ Stream II corps members on Friday. She made an emotional appeal to Governor Muhammadu Yahaya, urging for swift government intervention.
“But as we are gathered here today, it is with tears in my eyes that I want to bring to the attention of His Excellency, a very pressing concern that affects the welfare and safety of not just these vibrant young men and women, but the entire camp community,โ Nwachuku lamented.
Appealing to the state government, she emphasized that support would not only restore a safe and functional environment but also boost the morale of the corps members.
She expressed gratitude to Governor Yahaya for previous assistance and acknowledged the Chief Judge of the state, Justice Halima Mohammed represented by Justice Zainab Abdulkadir for administering the oath to the 1,629 new corps members, including 893 males and 736 females.
In her address to the corps members, Nwachuku encouraged them to uphold discipline and respect for local traditions throughout their service year.
