Captain Sumeet Sabharwal, the veteran pilot who tragically lost his life in last weekโs Air India crash, was laid to rest in an emotional ceremony in Mumbai on Tuesday.
He had been living with and caring for his 92-year-old father, who bravely stood by his coffin during the final rites, surrounded by mourners from across the aviation community.
The captain, remembered for his calm leadership and years flying experience, was praised by airline officials and friends alike as a selfless professional whose actions during the final moments of the doomed flight may have helped reduce further casualties on the ground.
Meanwhile, the only survivor of the crash, a British-Indian man named Vishwash Ramesh, has been discharged from the hospital and is now recovering at home.
He continues to grieve the loss of his brother, who was also on the flight. As of this week, authorities have been able to identify and return the remains of over 85 victims to their families, thanks to extensive DNA testing.
Though the process has been slow and painful, officials noted they are doing everything possible to ensure every family receives answers and closure.
Investigators have recovered the planeโs black box, which they hope will shed light on what caused the sudden crash. Early speculation points to a rare dual engine failure, though officials have not ruled out other possibilities.
As a precaution, Air India has temporarily grounded several of its Dreamliner aircraft while international teams assist with the ongoing inquiry.
Despite the sorrow and the rather pathetic situation the crash plunged the world into, thereโs been a strong public show of solidarity and a renewed push for stricter safety checks across fleets, in hopes of preventing such a tragedy from ever happening again.
Rest in peace, Captain Summeet Sabharwal!
