A devastating explosion in the early hours of Saturday in Kano State has left at least five people dead and over a dozen brutally injured.
Authorities suspect the blast was caused by a military-grade mortar bomb, prompting immediate deployment of emergency responders, including medical personnel and security agents. The explosion caused widespread panic among residents in the affected area.
The State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, confirmed the fatalities and stated that preliminary investigations suggest the explosion may have involved a trailer carrying military ordnance.
However, he clarified that it is still unclear whether the vehicle and the explosive materials were linked to military forces or private contractors. Authorities have yet to determine the exact cause of the blast or confirm the ownership of the device.
This tragic event occurred just a day after another deadly explosion in Borno Stateโs Konduga Local Government Area, where a suspected Boko Haram suicide bomber targeted a crowded evening fish market.
That attack claimed at least 10 lives and left seven injured. Security reports indicate the attacker blended in with the crowd before detonating the bomb, triggering panic and chaos as victims lay injured and smoke filled the air.
โI received a call that something serious had happened. When I arrived, I found that it was a suspected explosion, possibly a military mortar bomb. Fifteen people were injured, and unfortunately, five died,โ he said.
“The situation is still under investigation, but we understand the vehicle involved may have come from Yobe State,โ he added.
“Preliminary findings suggest the explosive material was being transported by a trailer, but it remains unclear whether the vehicle was carrying military personnel or contractors,โ he said.
โSecurity agencies are currently investigating the incident. The facts will be clearer once the investigation is completed,โ he stated, while appealing to the public to remain calm.
The suicide bomber also died in the blast,โ Makama stated.
โThe Nigerian Army troops and emergency response teams were immediately deployed to the scene, and the injured victims were evacuated to a nearby medical facility for treatment.โ
