The Federal University of Petroleum Resources (FUPRE) has warned students and staff members against any form of protest over alleged injustices within the institution.
The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ezekiel O. Agbalagba, issued the warning in an internal memo dated July 21, which was personally signed and copied to the Governor of Delta State, the State Commissioner of Police, the State Director of the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Executive Chairman of Uvwie Local Government.
In the memo titled “Security Alert,” which was obtained by SaharaReporters on Tuesday, the Vice Chancellor stated that the university management has received credible security intelligence indicating that certain individuals or groups are planning to block access, cause disruptions, and inflict catastrophic damage to lives and property within the University premises.
He warned staff and students of the potential threat and cautioned that the university management will not tolerate any actions that jeopardise the peaceful academic environment.
He wrote, “This is to notify the university community that Management has received credible security intelligence indicating that certain individuals or groups are planning to block access, cause disruptions, instigate a crisis, and inflict catastrophic damage to both lives and property within the University premises.
“Be advised that the University Management will not tolerate any actions that jeopardize the peaceful academic environment or undermine the significant achievement of the Visitor, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu (GCFR) administration in maintaining an uninterrupted academic calendar across Nigerian universities.”
Prof. Agbalagba stated that the Federal University of Petroleum Resources functions as a legitimate government institution, guided by its enabling Act, relevant laws, statutes, and regulations.
“Therefore, any staff member or student who participates, either now or in the future, in any act that disrupts the peace of our University community will face severe consequences,” the VC warned.
“Every action that contravenes the university’s rules and regulations carries repercussions, and Management will not hesitate to apply the full weight of the law.”
SaharaReporters gathered that some staff members of the school are planning a protest over alleged injustices by the school management.
However, details of the grievances remain unclear as of the time of filing this report.
