The Nigeria Police Force’s IGP Monitoring Unit has changed its alleged offence against human rights activist and convener of #RevolutionNow movement, Omoyele Sowore.
Sowore, who made this known on Tuesday said the police changed the alleged fictitious offence without providing concrete details.
Reporters earlier reported that Sowore rejected an invitation from the IGP Monitoring Unit, citing numerous legal inconsistencies and demanding a fresh, legally grounded summons.
He disclosed that he had reached out to the IGP Monitoring Team, requesting a valid invitation and a copy of the petition against him that necessitated the invitation.
Sowore said the IGP Monitoring Team had invited him for questioning over what the police described as inciting disturbance.
But in his response to the invitation, he formally requested that the IGP Monitoring Unit provide him with a properly issued and legally grounded invitation, and an advance copy of the petition which allegedly necessitates his appearance.
However, according to him, the police refused to comply with his request.
But in an update made public on Tuesday, Sowore stated that the IGP Monitoring Unit has now quietly revised the earlier invitation, which had cited the “Inciting Disturbance”, a non-existent section of Nigerian law.
“After being called out for fabricating offenses and citing non-existent laws, the IGP Monitoring Unit has now revised its initial invitation, quietly removing the fictitious charge of ‘Inciting Disturbance’ and the absurd reference to Section 53(2) of the ACJA 2025, a law that doesn’t exist,” Sowore said.
According to him, the police now claim the matter involves “Forgery and Criminal Defamation,” but have failed to provide the necessary legal documentation to support the new allegations.
“They now claim the matter relates to Forgery and Criminal Defamation.
“However, they still refuse to provide me or my legal team with a copy of the petition or even disclose the identity of the complainant behind these allegations,” he said.
Sowore, who has faced multiple legal challenges and arrests in recent years over his political activism and media work, described the evolving accusations as baseless.
“This confirms what I’ve suspected all along, they are simply engaging in trial and error, fishing for excuses!” he said.
