Donald Trump has warned that “a whole civilisation will die” if Iran fails to comply with a US ultimatum, escalating tensions between the United States and Iran.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump said the consequences of non-compliance would be catastrophic. “A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again. I don’t want that to happen, but it probably will,” he wrote.
The warning comes as Washington sets a midnight GMT deadline for Tehran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil transit route that has been effectively closed.
Trump stated that the US military might attack Iran’s power plants, bridges, and other civilian infrastructure into the “stone age,” although he did not provide specifics.
Trump has given Iran until midnight GMT on Tuesday to cease its de facto closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway that is used to move commodities and oil.
He claimed on Monday that a proposed temporary cease-fire was insufficient.
Iran has resisted US pressure; according to state media, the government is demanding a complete conclusion to the conflict rather than only a cease-fire.
Trump hinted at a last-minute deal in his Truth Social tweet.
“Now that we have Complete and Total Regime Change, where different, smarter, and less radicalized minds prevail, maybe something revolutionarily wonderful can happen, WHO KNOWS? We will find out tonight,” he wrote.
Trump declared on Monday that US forces will destroy “every bridge in Iran” and cripple “every power plant” in the nation beginning late on Tuesday night in Washington, DC. Many analysts believe this would be a flagrant war crime.
Iran has been continually bombarded by US and Israeli jets since February 28. On Tuesday, Tehran reported that its vital oil export terminal on Kharg island was being attacked, even before Trump threatened to terminate “civilisation.”
