A report saying that Washington had agreed to release Iran’s frozen assets held in Qatar and other foreign banks has been denied by a top United States official.
The denial comes amid delegations from Iran and the US arriving in Islamabad, Pakistan, ahead of talks to end the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
A Reuters report says an unnamed “senior Iranian source” told the news outlet that the US had agreed to unfreeze the assets, adding that the move was directly linked to ensuring safe passage in the Strait of Hormuz.
Addressing the report, a senior US official from the White House called it “false”, while noting that the meetings have yet to begin.
“False. The meetings have not even started yet,” the source said.
Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met with US Vice President JD Vance in Islamabad on Saturday, with Sharif’s office disclosing that peace talks to end the Middle East war had “commenced.”
