President Bola Tinubu officially launched the construction of the new national headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abuja on Tuesday.
During the groundbreaking ceremony, President Tinubu described the project as a representation of democratic endurance and institutional pride.
The announcement follows a pledge by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, who assured that the facility would be completed before the end of Tinubuโs first term in 2027.
The new INEC annex, designed by the commissionโs technical department, is being developed by the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA).
The facility will feature offices, meeting and conference rooms, a 1,000-seat auditorium, and dedicated IT infrastructure areas, including an Election Monitoring and Support Centre.
Additionally, it will house a museum to preserve Nigeriaโs electoral history and promote civic education.
Speaking to attendees, President Tinubu emphasized that the significance of the project extends beyond its physical structure. It embodies the resilience of Nigeriaโs democracy and the ongoing commitment to electoral integrity.
He stressed that the ceremony was not merely about construction, but a testament to the strength and independence of the countryโs democratic institutions.
Excerpt:
“Todayโs ceremony is not merely about bricks and mortar. It is about the strength of our democracy, the independence of our institutions, and the future of our electoral integrity.
โINEC has been and remains the backbone of Nigeriaโs democratic journey. Its role in conducting free, fair, and credible elections is central to the trust our people place in their government and our democratic processes.
โFor this reason, it is only right that such a pivotal institution is housed in a structure that reflects its dignity, responsibility, and national significance.
“This new headquarters is a clear signal of our unwavering support for INECโs autonomy, capacity, and growth.
โIt will provide not just a home, but a hub for innovation, planning, training, and transparency in electoral administration.
“Our democracy is still evolving, and as it grows, so too must the institutions that support and protect it.
โWe are committed to ensuring that INEC is fully equipped, not only in infrastructure, but in law, policy, and resources to carry out its constitutional mandate with courage, fairness, and excellence.
โLet me also take this moment to commend the leadership and staff of INEC past and present, for their dedication in the face of challenges.
โAs we break ground today, we also lay a stronger foundation for democratic resilience in Nigeria,โ Tinubu said.
