The Anambra State Governor, Prof Chukwuma Soludo, has slammed governorship candidates who pledge to serve only one term in office, calling such promises deceptive and indicative of mental instability.
Speaking at a rally in Anambra South where he received endorsements for a second term in office, Soludo criticised candidates from the region who are allegedly campaigning to disrupt the existing zoning arrangement in the state.
The zoning system, according to Soludo, stipulates that after his expected eight-year tenure representing Anambra South, power should rotate to Anambra Central.
The governor questioned the logic behind any aspirant proposing to serve for just one term, labelling it a manipulation tactic to mislead the public.
He said anybody who comes to say they would serve only one term needs psychiatric examination.
Soludo argued that the people of Anambra have evolved politically and intellectually, and should not be taken for granted by desperate politicians.
He warned that those attempting to short-circuit the zoning system were acting selfishly and irresponsibly.
He said there are calibers and categories of people Anambra can no longer entertain.
According to the governor, “There is zoning in Anambra and that after Chukwuma Soludo as governor, the next governor of after 8 years, the next governor of Anambra will go to Anambra Central and now after anybody who is contesting for governorship from Anambra South is trying to disrupt the zoning system in an Anambra. Some of them want to come to lie to us. How can anybody, anybody with brain; you think you are talking to fools?
“You come to people and say I will do only one term. Anybody any politician who said that, must be sent to a psychiatric home. Because the person must have some mental problem.When the constitution allows you to stay up to 8 years, they come and tell us. “I’m going to spend one term.”
He said, “Tell us where it has ever happened. Anybody who is saying I’m going to do one term needs a psychiatric examination because you are taking everybody else to be a fool.”
“Anambra, we have advanced. There are caliber and categories of people that Anambra has since gone much higher. We are not going to go back.
“Street urchins, Anamra has no place for street urchins. Anambra has no place for street urchins. Even those of them whose secondary school certificate are questionable. Those without school, they have no school certificate, I tell you. Anyway, that’s for another day. Not today. Some of them have no school certificate, they want to be governor of Anambra.
“They want to be governor of Anambra. Anambra of the Nnamdi Azikwe, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwuo and Chinua Achebe, that’s the state we are talking about. I am getting angry actually when these people say they want to be governor of Anambra very annoying with GCE, we don’t know who took it for them,” Soludo added.
