Global internet observatory NetBlocks has reported that access to major online platforms, including X (formerly Twitter), YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, and WhatsApp, has been restricted across multiple networks in Turkey.
According to NetBlocks, the restrictions began late Sunday, coinciding with calls by the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) for rallies in Istanbul after police barricaded areas surrounding the party’s headquarters, Reuters reports.
Data from Turkey’s Freedom of Expression Association, which monitors local censorship, confirmed that the disruption started around 20:45 GMT on Sunday.
It added that access to social media platforms was being throttled, making it difficult for millions of users to upload or stream content.
NetBlocks noted that such targeted restrictions are a recurring tactic used by Turkish authorities during politically sensitive periods to curb mobilization and limit the spread of dissent online.
Turkey’s Access Providers Union, the body responsible for implementing government blocking orders, did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Rights groups have consistently accused Ankara of using internet shutdowns and social media restrictions as a tool to silence critics, especially during protests and opposition gatherings.
