Nigeria’s Defence Minister, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has resigned from office with immediate effect, citing health concerns in a letter addressed to President Bola Tinubu on December 1.
President Tinubu has accepted his resignation and expressed appreciation for his service to the country. The president is expected to forward the name of a successor to the Senate later this week.
Abubakar, 63, served as a two term governor of Jigawa State from 2015 to 2023 before his appointment as Defence Minister on August 21, 2023.
His resignation comes at a sensitive moment for the administration, following President Tinubu’s recent declaration of a national security emergency, with additional details expected in the coming days.
