Soon, the dictionary will have to accommodate a new lexicon: “grandmatricide” โ the practice of killing one’s grandma for monetary gains, as the manner in which teenagers kill their grandmothers is these days raising concern.
Emerging reports indicate that a boy (name undisclosed), who was living with his grandmother, a businesswoman who travels to Cotonou in the Benin Republic to procure goods as a wholesaler and resell to retailers in Nigeria, recently stabbed the businesswoman to death.
The incident unfolded on Friday, the 21st of February, when the grandmother, in her usual way, prepared to travel. The grandson, however, having noticed the huge sum of money that was reportedly 4 million naira in cash, decided to stab her that night and carted away both the money and some gold jewellery worth a fortune.
It was reported that the woman’s death wasn’t noticed until two days later, on Sunday, the 23rd of February, 2025, when a relative came to visit. The visitation of the relative was the event that finally let the residents know that the businesswoman had been murdered in cold blood, as her body was discovered with a knife intact.
The Pako Police Station, Amukoko Roundabout in Ajweomi Ifelodun Local Government Area, Lagos State, has begun its search for the suspect.
May we not raise our nemesis.
