In a shocking act of banditry, 18 passengers traveling aboard an ABC Transport bus were abducted by gunmen in Kogi State on Sunday, March 16, 2025. The attack, which took place along a major highway, has once again highlighted the growing insecurity on Nigeria’s roadways.
The Ambush
The bus, which was en route from the South East to Abuja, was ambushed at Oloma, a notorious flashpoint in Ofu Local Government Area, near the Kogi-Enugu border. Witnesses reported that heavily armed assailants intercepted the vehicle, forcibly removed the passengers and driver, and marched them into the dense surrounding forests.
Confirming the incident, Retired Commodore Jerry Omodara, Security Adviser to the Kogi State Governor, stated that a joint security operation is underway to track down the kidnappers and rescue the victims. “A combined team comprising the Military, Police, DSS, NSCDC, and local vigilantes has been deployed. We are working tirelessly to ensure their safe return,” Omodara assured.
A Disturbing Trend
This abduction is part of a worrying pattern of highway kidnappings in Kogi State. In February 2024, passengers on two commercial buses, including one operated by ABC Transport, were similarly kidnapped in the region. The victims were later freed following intensive security interventions.
Government Response and Public Concern
The rising wave of kidnappings has sparked nationwide concern. In response, the Kogi State Government has reiterated its commitment to securing the state’s highways and ensuring the safety of travelers. “We will not relent in our efforts to make Kogi a safe haven for residents and visitors alike,” Omodara affirmed. He also urged the families of the kidnapped passengers to remain hopeful as security forces intensify efforts to rescue them.
A Call for Vigilance
As authorities work to dismantle criminal networks operating in the region, the public is encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity. The government has vowed to strengthen security measures to curb the menace of banditry and restore peace to the area.
