In the wake of the tragic lynching of 16 travelers in Uromi, Edo State, communities such as Old Ilushi Road, Opere, and Good Will Junction have witnessed a mass exodus of residents. The pervasive fear of reprisals and indiscriminate arrests by security forces has led many to abandon their homes and seek refuge in neighboring towns.
Community Perspectives on the Incident
The events leading up to the mob action have been recounted by various residents, shedding light on the underlying tension.
Vigilante Intervention:
A local resident named Monday explained that the community’s vigilante group received intelligence about travelers allegedly carrying weapons. Upon their arrival in Uromi, the vigilantes attempted to engage them, but the travelers’ refusal escalated the situation. “One of them pulled out a knife, prompting the vigilantes to raise an alarm, accusing them of being kidnappers,” Monday recounted.
Historical Insecurity:
Another resident, Mr. Akhere, highlighted the community’s longstanding struggles with kidnappings and insecurity. He noted that while the mob action is indefensible, the victims were suspected kidnappers rather than hunters. “Our local vigilantes have been on the trail of these suspected kidnappers. It has been tough for everybody,” he stated.
Personal Tragedies:
Jenny Osajie, a 30-year-old resident, shared a personal ordeal, revealing that her elder brother was kidnapped and killed after the family couldn’t meet a ransom demand. “They were so bold that they called us to come and pick the dead body of our brother,” she lamented, emphasizing the pervasive fear and frustration within the community.
Government Response and Ongoing Investigations
In response to the crisis, Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo visited Kano State to express condolences and assure that justice will prevail. He announced that 14 suspects have been arrested and will be transferred to Abuja for further interrogation. “We have made tremendous progress… I can assure you that justice will prevail,” Governor Okpebholo stated.
Additionally, the Arewa Consultative Forum has called for an independent judicial panel to investigate the killings, underscoring the national significance of the incident and the demand for accountability.
Heightened Tensions and Community Displacement
The fear of reprisals has not been confined to Uromi alone. Nearby areas, such as Ekpoma, experienced panic following rumors of impending attacks, leading to temporary disruptions in local markets. Security personnel were deployed to restore calm.
The situation remains fluid, with many residents still reluctant to return to their homes. The community’s plea is for a balanced approach that ensures justice for the victims while addressing the root causes of insecurity that have plagued the region.
As investigations continue, the hope is for a resolution that fosters peace, restores trust in security agencies, and allows displaced residents to return safely to their communities.
