Edison Ehie, the Chief of Staff to suspended Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, has alleged that he was offered a ₦5 billion bribe to orchestrate the governor’s impeachment. Speaking on Channels Television’s “Sunday Politics,” Ehie asserted that he possesses evidence of the bribe attempt stored on his phone.
Ehie stated that the bribe offer occurred in early October 2023, during his tenure as the majority leader of the Rivers State House of Assembly. He emphasized that he has documented and distributed this evidence to trusted individuals as a precautionary measure.
In the same interview, Ehie addressed allegations made by former Head of Service George Nwaeke, who claimed that Ehie was involved in the October 30, 2023, bombing of the Rivers State House of Assembly complex. Nwaeke alleged witnessing a bag of money being handed over to Ehie at the Government House for the operation. Ehie categorically denied these claims, describing them as false and politically motivated. He announced plans to sue Nwaeke for criminal libel, asserting that he had no involvement in the incident.
These developments occur amid ongoing political tensions in Rivers State, following the suspension of Governor Fubara and the appointment of a sole administrator by President Bola Tinubu. The situation has elicited reactions from various stakeholders, including the Transition Monitoring Group (TMG) and several Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), who plan to challenge the actions of the sole administrator in court, citing concerns over unconstitutional governance and unauthorized spending of state funds.
The allegations and counter-allegations underscore the complex political dynamics in Rivers State, highlighting the challenges of governance and the imperative for transparency and accountability in political processes.
