Tension has gripped the Agukwu-Amaya community in Ndundu, Uturu, Isuikwuato Local Government Area of Abia State, following a deadly ambush by unidentified gunmen on Friday, April 4, 2025.
The attackers targeted a group of Chinese expatriates and their police escorts en route to a company site in the area. Tragically, the assault claimed the lives of two Chinese nationals—Mr. Quan, a company manager, and Mr. Cai, his colleague—as well as Inspector Audu Saidu, one of the police officers assigned to escort the group. The gunmen also made away with Inspector Saidu’s rifle.
According to a statement from the Abia State Police Command, delivered by the command’s spokesperson, DSP Maureen Chinaka, prompt intervention from the police, in collaboration with the military and other security agencies, led to the rescue of four Chinese nationals and two police officers.
The statement reads in part:
On April 4, 2025, at about 5:30 PM, a distress call was received regarding an ambush on Chinese expatriates and their police escorts at Agukwu-Amaya, Ndundu Community, Uturu, Isuikwuato LGA.
In response, a joint team of police operatives, the military, and other sister agencies, led by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Uturu, launched a rescue operation. As a result, four Chinese expatriates were successfully rescued—three unhurt and one with injuries.
Two police officers were also rescued, including Inspector Uba Ahmed, who sustained a gunshot wound to the leg. Both the injured officer and the expatriate are currently receiving medical care and are responding to treatment at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abakaliki.
Further search operations continued into Saturday, April 5, led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations). With the support of local community members, the team successfully rescued another officer, Inspector Ijeagwa Friday, who was found unharmed.
Security remains tight in the area as investigations continue and efforts to apprehend the attackers intensify.
