An Ekiti State High Court sitting in Ado Ekiti has sentenced two men, Onileowo Rotimi and Adetola Ayodele, both aged 42, to death by hanging and life imprisonment for their roles in a violent conspiracy involving armed robbery and kidnapping.
According to court documents, the crimes occurred on October 7, 2016, in Abuta, Omuo Ekiti, where the duo conspired to rob and abduct Mrs. Ajibola Oyelola.
During the trial, the prosecuting counsel, Akinola Abon, informed the court that the offences contravened Sections 516, 402, and 403 (A) of the Criminal Code Law, Cap C16, Laws of Ekiti State, 2012, as well as Section 3 (a)(b) of the Ekiti State Kidnapping and Terrorism (Prohibition) Law, 2015.
The prosecution presented four witnesses and tendered confessional statements made by the defendants as key exhibits. In their defence, both men, represented by legal counsel, admitted to meeting and forming a friendship while in prison. However, they did not call any witnesses to support their case.
Delivering the judgment, Justice Bamidele Omotoso ruled that the prosecution had convincingly proved the charges of conspiracy, kidnapping, and armed robbery beyond reasonable doubt.
As a result, the court sentenced both Onileowo and Adetola to life imprisonment for kidnapping and death by hanging for armed robbery.
