The Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, has likened social media to a terrorist organization, citing its role in spreading misinformation and fueling unrest across Nigeria.
Speaking during the 7th Executive Committee Meeting of the Northern Traditional Rulers’ Council, held behind closed doors in Maiduguri, Borno State, the revered monarch expressed deep concern over the unchecked influence of social media on national stability.
“Social media is one terrorist organization. Someone can sit comfortably in their home, create false narratives, and the public believes it without verification,” the Sultan stated. “This dangerous trend poses a serious threat to national peace and unity.”
He called on security agencies to treat the issue with the urgency it deserves. “Security agencies must address this terrorist organization called social media. The damage it’s causing is immeasurable.”
Turning his attention to the persistent violence in Plateau State and other parts of the country, the Sultan expressed frustration over the government’s inability to stem the tide of bloodshed.
“We have issued countless statements condemning the killings. But how many more times must we speak out before our political leaders and security forces act decisively?” he asked.
The monarch stressed the unity of traditional rulers in the North, emphasizing their collective resolve to take a stronger stand.
“There are over 86 traditional rulers in Northern Nigeria. We must speak with one voice to say: enough is enough. Innocent lives are being wasted senselessly. We feel the pain of our people and cannot continue to watch in silence,” he declared.
He further called for sincere dialogue and collaboration behind closed doors among traditional leaders, political actors, and security stakeholders to bring an end to the crisis.
