The police have provided evidence to debunk the allegations circulating in the media that a convoy identified as First Lady Oluremi Tinubu’s was involved in the tragic death of a nine-year-old in Akure.
Emerging reports exonerated the First Lady, stating that she had visited Ondo State solely for the launch of the Renewed Hope Initiative Health Programme, where she was said to have distributed 10,000 professional kits, containing crocs and scrubs, to South-Western midwives.
DSP Olufunmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, the spokesperson for the police command, expressed in a statement that the information circulated by some news agencies and blogs is baseless, misleading, and lacks verification.
“The attention of the Ondo State Police Command has been drawn to a false and misleading report published by Sahara Reporters on April 17.
“It alleged that the convoy of the first lady, Sen. Oluremi, was responsible for the tragic death of a young girl in Akure,โ the statement read.
“Eyewitness accounts and preliminary investigations conducted by the command confirm that the incident was caused by a hit-and-run driver operating an unregistered white Lexus vehicle.
“And not by any vehicle associated with the first ladyโs convoy.โ
“Furthermore, Sahara Reporters inaccurately claimed the deceased girl was nine years old.
“At no point was the first ladyโs convoy involved in this tragedy,โ the spokesperson reaffirmed.
Upon comprehensive investigation, it was discovered that the seven-year-old, whose age was erroneously given as nine, as confirmed by the parents, was hit by a hit-and-run driver who drove an unregistered Lexus.
The accident which occured in Oba-Ile area of Akure had attracted the attention of a cyclists who went after the fleeing Lexus in a futile hot chase.
The Ondo State commissioner of police on visiting the aggrieved family assured the victim’s parents of a comprehensive and transparent investigation into the matter at hand.
