Tragedy struck the residents of Oremeta Street in the Ojodu-Berger area of Lagos State following the collapse of a multistorey building that was still undergoing construction.
The building reportedly collapsed on Saturday morning, the 19th of April, around 8:00 a.m., trapping some individuals underneath its ruins.
The tragic incident was said to have occurred suddenly and unexpectedly, as is typical of natural disasters. However, some eyewitnesses have mentioned that the building was not structurally sound, as multistorey buildings should be.
One of the eyewitnesses explained that the structure of the building, to rationally thinking Nigerians, communicated the fact that it would eventually give way, as the foundation wasn’t firm and well laid.
“Anyone who knows that building should know that it was a bomb waiting to explode. โI hardly go there to buy food because I was always scared the building would collapse while Iโm there.โ
Witnesses and passersby have alerted the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) to assist those trapped beneath the building rubble.
“Right now, we cannot determine how many people are trapped, but emergency responders have started rescue operations,” an eye witness clarified.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has initiated plans to rescue those trapped in the building debris.
