The Ebonyi State Police Command has launched a manhunt for a woman accused of poisoning her husband and stepson, leading to their deaths.
The victims, identified as Uncle Light, a middle-aged man, and his son, Miracle, died under suspicious circumstances at their residence near Ebebe Junction in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, on Wednesday, April 23, 2025.
An eyewitness revealed that the woman had recently moved in with Uncle Light after divorcing her former husband earlier this year. According to residents, she was last seen early Wednesday morning, leaving the house with her baby — shortly before the tragic discovery.
“Since the incident happened, we haven’t seen the woman. She left very early in the morning with her child, abandoning the man and his son inside the house,” a resident said. “Later, we noticed they were vomiting and in distress. The man was found lying naked inside the house, while his son collapsed by the gate. We tried to help, but unfortunately, both died before medical assistance could reach them.”
Another resident, who requested anonymity, recounted hearing disturbing noises during the night.
“I heard loud voices in the middle of the night and told my wife something was wrong. At first, we thought it was just noise from a nearby church vigil. It wasn’t until morning that we saw the boy writhing in pain outside the gate, crying for water. Sadly, after drinking, he passed away shortly after,” the resident explained.
Although some residents suspected severe food poisoning or diarrhoea, authorities have indicated that an autopsy will determine the exact cause of death.
In a twist, a man who accompanied police officers to the scene identified himself as the woman’s brother. He claimed she was ill and has since been taken into police custody for questioning.
The bodies of the deceased have been evacuated, and investigations are ongoing.
