The Delta Chapter of the People’s Democratic Party has, in an emergency meeting noted that the massive defection of its members, including the state governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, former governor Ifeanyi Okowa, stakeholders, and leadership of the party to the All Progressives Congress (APC) will not make the party falter in any way.
The meeting, which was held on Monday in Asaba, was chaired by the acting chairman of the state’s caretaker committee of the PDP, Anthony Ejumejowo Esq., who mentioned that the party is still committed and effective in the face of rising opposition.
The party has called on its remaining loyal members in the state to keep up the spirit of loyalty and commitment to the party and to proactively act by putting in place local government and ward executives, following the huge vacuum created by the defection of the state governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, stakeholders, and leadership of the PDP to the opposition party.
The rendezvous was reported to have in attendance stakeholders and party stalwarts across the 25 local government areas in the state, and was duly signed by the acting chairman and the state acting publicity secretary, Bolowei Gburugburu.
“That we, the members of the Peoples Democratic Party wish them well in their political sojourn. That the former executive members of the state executive members of the senatorial districts, the executive members of the 25 local government areas and the various ward executive members handover all properties and assets of the party including the party state secretariat and LGA Secretariat across the 25 local government areas to the most senior staff of the party.
“The decamping of the governor and executives of the party at all levels in Delta State is something not envisaged in the constitution of the party and as such creates a vacuum. It is erroneous for the governor and his cohorts to think that they represent the entirety and structure of the party. The structure and spirit of the party lies with the ordinary members of the party that have been committed to the party since 1998 and we therefore cannot let the party die.
“In the light of the happenings, party faithful across the all wards in the 25 local government are therefore called upon to convey ward meetings with the sole purpose of electing adhoc acting executives of the wards to pilot the affairs of the party. That all party faithful remain calm and await further instructions and directions from the national leadership of the party.”
