Presidential hopeful Atiku Abubakar has condemned the arrest and detention of social media activist Martins Vincent Otse, alias VeryDarkMan, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Atiku described the act as a blatant abuse of power by the Tinubu administration.
In a statement released on Monday, the 2023 People’s Democratic Party candidate bemoaned the activist’s detention without formal charges as a violation of constitutional rights in its most flagrant form, and a chilling reminder of the growing authoritarianism already present in Nigeria.
Atiku brazenly faulted Tinubu’s administration for turning political repression into a hallmark of its rule, targeting dissenters and critics while allowing political loyalists facing credible corruption allegations to go unpunished.
โThe systematic crackdown on opposition voices by this administration is disgraceful and an affront to democratic norms,โ Atiku stated, calling on Nigerians to resist what he described as state-sponsored repression.
