Two co-wives from the Dakwa community in Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have been hospitalized and undergone surgery after ingesting a harmful herbal substance, commonly known as Kayanmata.
According to The People’s Insight, the women—whose names have been withheld—resorted to using the local aphrodisiac in a desperate bid to rekindle their husband’s attention after he took a third wife.
Kayanmata, a herb traditionally used to boost intimacy and sexual attraction, reportedly triggered severe complications shortly after the women consumed it. Their husband explained that the incident occurred just three days after his wedding to a new bride from Gusau, the Zamfara State capital.
“I was staying at my new wife’s house when I got a call from my main residence that my two wives were seriously ill,” he recounted. “I rushed home and found them in pain, rolling on the ground and clutching their stomachs.”

Initially, a local nurse attempted to treat them with IV drips, but their condition failed to improve. The husband then transported them to a clinic in nearby Madalla town, where they underwent medical tests and emergency surgery.
“They spent about a week at the clinic before being discharged,” he added.
In the wake of the incident, the husband said efforts are underway to locate the female herbalist who sold the concoction to his wives, in order to investigate her practices and prevent other unsuspecting women from falling victim.
