In a startling development, the Edo State Government has shut down an illicit brothel discovered within the premises of Ujuele Primary School in Esan West Local Government Area.
The action was confirmed on Thursday, May 22, 2025, during a press briefing in Benin City by Eugene Okolosie, the State Coordinator for the Protection of Government Property. The closure comes as part of a broader crackdown on the illegal occupation of public lands and infrastructure across the state.
Okolosie revealed that over 2,000 plots of land illegally seized by private individuals have been reclaimed, with public schools among the most affected. “A lot of government properties have been encroached upon. Seven percent of our ancient moat has been taken over. Public schools are the worst hit,” he lamented.

At Ujuele Primary School, the government discovered that a fully functioning brothel had been set up within the school compound. The illegal establishment has now been sealed, and discussions are underway with the state governor to determine future use of the recovered properties.
“In Ambrose Alli University alone, we have reclaimed several plots from land grabbers. In another shocking instance, the community around Iyoba divided school land into two and sold half to private individuals. A kitchen was even constructed right beside a classroom. Imagine students trying to focus while the smell of stew wafts into their learning space,” Okolosie stated.
He added that those implicated in these unlawful activities are currently under investigation and have been summoned for questioning.
The government has vowed to continue reclaiming encroached public properties and restoring dignity and safety to educational institutions across the state.
